Camp Jackson Columbia [South Carolina] June 23, 1918. Dear Mr. Meyer: For the first time since entering the army I have more time than I know what to do with. Am confined to the hospital with a sprained ankle, nothing serious but they make us go to the hospital with the slightest injury. It is exactly one month ago today that I left good old [St. Louis] and believe me I certainly have been one busy chap ever since. Am stationed in the medical supply depot here, which is used as a school for the training of men in the system and methods used to obtain, preserve and distribute army medical supplies. We have about sixty five men in our class and more coming in every day. Bugle calls us at 5:30 a.m., breakfast six, roll call 6 30 and report for duty 7 oclock. We have “setting up” excercise and drill one or two hours each day the balance of our time

Then besides the above, we have class four nights each week, and every bit of our spare time we must “put in” in study; in order to keep abreast of the programme they have mapped out for us. With one month of strenious routine like that I am glad to get a little rest in the hospital, then on the other hand I have become so accustomed to being out of doors it almost kills me to be kept inside. Camp Jackson is said to be one of the largest in the states, there are between fifty and sixty thousand men here now, and train loads of “rookies” coming in every day. We are allowed to go to Columbia, which is about ten miles from camp (by electric line), any evening that we do not have lecture. I usually go in on a saturday evening and have dinner at the principle hotel and otherwise base my conduct on my
