[October] 7, 1918 Mr. [William] Ochse Dear Mr Ochsie:- As I write you tonight I sit in a tent Y.M.C.A. somewhere in France with the rain pouring down with a happy bunch of fellows all talking of the way we have got the dutch on the run. I left the States on Labor day landed in England but was only there a short time while we came across to France and I like France much

The country is beautiful I like it very much if I could just talk a little more French I was on duty in a hospital for two weeks just returned to my detachment last week. Am not very crazy about hospital work. The boat we sailed on was a very large and swift boat we made the trip in seven days, never even got a glimpse of a U. boat

[page 3] I was in hopes we would for we sure had some dandy guns I would have felt for my U. that got in front of them I saw some very fine war machinery on the trip wish I could explain some of it to you but Ill have that much to tell you when I return. The weather here at present is ideal couldnt ask for better even though it does rain

Today we were able to buy the first cigarettes and candy since we have been here sure was a treat to us, writing paper is also scarce.
