San Benito Texas Dear sister a few lines letng you know that i am well and hope this finds you the same. Well sister i am sure busy now i guess we or going to leave Texas we or in San Benito Texas again just got here from Kingsville [Texas] left Corpus Christi [Texas] two weeks ago we or one of the out fits to go to France we expect to be gong north in a few days for New York state or [Pennsylvania]

[page 2] i was made a sergeant did not want it but they made me one any way every man in the company was made corporal or sergent except the recruits we got two hundred men now all recruits i guess with the new pay increse i will draw 40 some dollars a month the whole regiment is to together agan Will Moran is here too. i think we will leave here Friday we may go though St. Louis [Missouri] all the regulars down new Brownsville [Texas] or leaving the infantry Well i will drop you later

Description | Oliver Vie was born January 28, 1887, in St. Louis, Missouri. After working for several years in a shoe factory, he enlisted in the army in October 1913, Company K, 26th Infantry. He served along the Mexican border before going with the first contingent to France in June 1917. He fought in the battles of Cantigny and Soissons and was wounded in action and died July 20, 1918. In this letter to his sister Grace, Vie, wrote in regards to leaving for the East Coast and the possibility of going to France. He also mentioned a promotion to sergeant. |
