We have been moved again this time to Kingsville [Texas] this is a pretty big town there is the largest ranch in the united states here a woman by the name of King own it. i suppose you hear of it already. We or 125 miles from Brownsville now just our company is here this is the best place i have been in since i have been down here. Well mabe i will get more sleep now as i used to be up every night before. Just before we left they moved us to San Benito we had trouble

[page 2] up there we got 7 guns we took away from mexicans took two prisoners to jail at San Benito [Texas] they were haveing lots of trouble up that way when they took our company away everything is quiet here but last week the mexicans made the cowboys stay up on the house tops all night. Well this town has shows in it so we will have some way to pass the time away. The people down this way sure like the soldiers it is the same way in San Benito [Texas] and the rest of the places i have been

[page 4] about the trouble that is going on down here it seems to be geting worse the 4th infantry went in too Brownsville [Texas] yesterday and this company is going out tuesday to guard all the bridges for the 6th cav. is going through to Brownville we have been doing a lot of train riding since we have been down here it dont cost any thing got to know all these towns down here most of them or small ones. Well i will close now hoping to hear from you soon again your loving brother Ollie please send my mail to Kingsville [Texas] Kingsville now as this is headquarters now.

Description | Oliver Vie was born January 28, 1887, in St. Louis, Missouri. After working for several years in a shoe factory, he enlisted in the army in October 1913, Company K, 26th Infantry. He served along the Mexican border before going with the first contingent to France in June 1917. He fought in the battles of Cantigny and Soissons and was wounded in action and died July 20, 1918. In this letter, Vie wrote his sister Grace and described King Ranch and the surrounding area. |
