Kingsville Texas [August] 23 rt 1916 Dear sister i thought i would drop you a few lines to let you know that things or well. Say Grace i suppose you read in the paper about the gulf storm well it blowed all the buildings in the camp away i lost near every thing i had it made this town look bad the next morning they say there is another one coming and it will blow harder it reached every thing and made the troops without home

Description | Oliver Vie was born January 28, 1887, in St. Louis, Missouri. After working for several years in a shoe factory, he enlisted in the army in October 1913, Company K, 26th Infantry. He served along the Mexican border before going with the first contingent to France in June 1917. He fought in the battles of Cantigny and Soissons and was wounded in action and died July 20, 1918. In this letter to his sister Grace, Vie, described the damage caused by the Galveston Hurricane. He also expressed frustration with army practices and sympathized with the deserters. |
