MEMORIAL to Major Crissy and Sargent Thomas Who have finished the race. ***** The Cleft the sky on wings of frail delight And onward sped across the azure blue With spirits high; the urge of winning held. Than eagles flight more swift and straight and true. A signal from high they gave A joyous welcome, like a clasp of hands The first lap done, they would a moment rest Before the onward flight to unknown lands. Unknown the boundry that these brave men crossed Unknown the land beyond this life’s short mile. We only know they waved with hearts of joy; And met their unknown pilot with a smile. Upon whatever craft we set our sail Who, who can tell what pilot we shall met? To lead us onward o’er divergent ways and make our fatalistic trip, complete. They have done well. across the sky’s deep blue A trial of stars shall mark their unmarked way And night by night shine brighter through the years With immortality’s immortal ray. They have gone on. Their journey is complete. Who knows what greater prize these brave have won? They shall smile on beyond our mortal ken, Who waived a greeting and farewell as one. O when the journey’s end is close, I pray; The sun may shine, and all the sky be clear. Into vast silences my swift craft glide; Without a shadow or a single tear! When seems the little day of life is done, Think not that it is over, but begun. And when we pause at life’s dividing stile; May we look to leave it with a wave and smile. Jeanette Lawrence Sacramento. My Dear Mrs. Thomas: The above appeared in Friday’s Bee Hat, I thought you might like a personal copy. Please accept these verses with my sincere sympathy. Mrs. J.R.K.
