NATIONAL WAR WORK COUNCIL OF THE Young Men’s Christian Association “With the Colors” Rockwell Field Aug. 17, 1919. Dear Mother, I thought I had better drop you a line and let you know that I am leaving this place for a few months. Two or three at least. Capt. Smith is taking six of us up into Oregon on a forest patrol. I am not sure just where we will be located. Some where near Salem though I think. We leave here tomorrow morning I think. The last 2 days have been strenuous ones for me for I have been flying steadily so I could get my R.M.A. before I leave. Capt. Smith managed it with the Colonel so I could do it. I am dead tired now and I am going to bed now in a very few minutes so I will not be

so near all in tomorrow. It is worth it though so I am not going to kick. Those wings mean every thing to me. Capt. Smith said that they were placing De Havilands on the forest patrol in place of Curtiss training ships and that I could have a Curtiss all my own to fly when we get there. It will sure be fine if I do. I will write you as soon as I get up there and let you know how every thing is going. Your “High Flyer” Virgil
