Transcript

[Battery “D” letterhead] March 16, 1950 Mr. John N. Thacher 262 San Jose Los Gatos, California Dear Captain John: Thank you very much for your letter of March 1, 1950. You will pardon the delay in answering your letter as I find it a necessity to put in so many hours a day working besides making arrangements for the Semi-annual meeting and dinner to be held at the Muehlebach Hotel, March 25th. In addition arrangements and preparations are going forward for the clan of Battery “D” to gather in the good old German city of St. Louis, Missouri, June 9th, 10th, and 11th to attend the 35th Division reunion, and in all probabilities break bread with the President at breakfast-time Saturday morning, June 10th. We all hope, the Good Lord be willing and good to you, that you take the new cane in hand and join us in St. Luis at that time. I note the several suggestions mentioned in your letter the purpose of raising funds for the Battery “D” Treasury. This we will talk over at the March 25th meeting. You also mentioned that the gold headed cane told you to make out a small check to the Battery “D” Treasury. In the event that you find that your conscience cannot over-throw the harassing of the ebony standing in the corner, you may satisfy your conscience by making your check payable to Fred J. Schmidt, Trustee. I hope that you will be able to join us in June and bring the cane with you, as we will do our utmost to persuade the President to bring with him his cane, which was presented to him in January, 1949, and for a small sum (This is blackmail and bribery) on the side to me personally, we will have a picture made of our two Captains, with their gold headed canes, made together. Sincerely yours, Fred J. Schmidt FJS/pd Secretary – Battery “D”
