[YMCA letterhead] May 12 1918 Dear Mamma, Papa, & Bro's. how are you these fine days we are having. I suppose all are hitting the ball pretty hard now getting the corn planted. This leaves me fine and dandy only still here in Boston doing guard duty. I got a letter from [Thomas] yesterday also one from Claude. [Thomas] thinks Detention is pretty tough going and of course it is a little hard on a fellow to come from free life and be shut up for 21 days but I dont think he will miss it much after he leaves [Great Lakes]. [YMCA letterhead] where I spent my longest days. tho he will find out that their is cloudy days as well as sun shiny ones and if any thing the cloudy ones have a lead over the bright ones. It has been real nice weather here for the past 3 or 4 days only plenty cool but I guess it is always cool hed of a night. Their isent much going on here, it is just about the same grind all the time, men are comming and men are going tho they wont give any of the Guard a chance to go until they get some more to take their places. You see this is supposed to be a Seaman Guard but instead

I guess I hadnt ought to kick for I have an easy place. my job is guarding the prisoners in the "Brig." jail it is called on the outside world. of course their is no work to that just keep eyes and ears open, and of course carry a percussion in case you need it. I have only had trouble with but one fellow and he tried to get wise and get out a window but he changed his mind. Well I must close hoping this finds all as well as it leaves me.
