SPECIFICATIONS, BENOIST AIRBOAT, TYPE 15. MODEL C. This model C. type was developed for special Military work, and because of the great efficiency required in this kind of a machine, we are installing two one-hundred horse power motors up in the wings of the machine, instead of one in the hull of the boat, driven by a chain transmission, as in our previous machines. This makes a substantial saving in weight, and will admit of building these machines in either the tractor or pusher style, the motors being offset and away from the cock-pit. The danger presented by the propeller to the occupance of the boat in the one-motor machine is not apparent in the two-motor machine when built as a tractor. In no way have we departed from established procedure in the construction of aeroplanes or in the rules laid down by good engineering practice. However, even on a casual examination of the constructional details and designs, many advantages are apparent. We adopted several years ago, and are using on all our boats, the diamond truss style of construction for carrying our center sections. By using these two diamond master struts instead of a box truss over the body of the boat, we are able to eliminate the heavy latteal guy wires, necessary in a box truss, making the rear part of the boat cock-pit, or the part containing the gasoline tanks, batteries, etc., very accessible, as one can walk from the cock-pit clear back to the stern of the boat without crawling under or between wires. We have also embodied in this diamond strut construction in our motor carrying section, making this much more rigid than when depending on guy wires and adding greatly to the factor of safety without adding any head resistance whatever, in the complete boat and motor assemblage over the usual construction. Because of the great lateral dimension of the machine necessary to do the work required of this war plane, the lower wings are giving a slight dihedral angle so as to bring the outer end up a little height above the water. A standard
