Aug 3 - 18 Dear Sister - : Well I have at last started a letter home. the first one in a month. I rec’d 3 or four and will make this one answer all. I am expecting another any time I am very well we are having pretty hot weather but not so warm as at home. The nights are nice and cool

I have a new pen I just bought it a very small one but it writes fine is a “Parker” I am playing E [flat] clarinet now I hope you are practiseing lots. You must practise scales I am sending you the name of a book of fine studies by C.L. Hanon’s Virtuoso Pianiast Schirmer Edition costs $1.50 be shure and get it. have Mrs. Slagle to get it she may be able to get it cheaper. I have a friend in the Band who is an artist on Piano and he recomended this Book. I am going to send some money for your lessons next Pay day. this book May be hard but you must keep at it. I understand We are going to have 50 men in our Band our Band leader has gone to Paris for a commision he Will be a Leiut. 2nd I shall expect you to be
