[American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] July 4 1918 Dear Ma — : Well I just got through the days work We ben playing all day. We had quite a celebration all kinds of races tug of war Ect. A French Reg celebrated with us The Y.M.C.A. gave away lemonade and cakes. This is the first time I ever saw them give away anything the [Red Cross] also gave away choclate and cigarettes they give away hot choclate and cigarettes every day. Two French airplanes done some fine stunt fluing over the parade ground a few days ago we had a review for [General] Pershing he Pined some medals on some of the men in a battalion that done exceptionly good work. While we were on the grounds the Boch airplanes came over and the French had a battle I seen both Boch come down in flames I rec’d a letter from Ellen Shaw to-day she is going to teach the same school. I shaved off my beard I got tired of it. I suppose you had a good time I hope so. I gave my self a delousing yesterday I was awful lousy. I am glad the boys from Bonner [Bonner Springs]

I dont know how I can make it after being gased I feel very good now The stars and stripes is published over here has a little news is not a great lot has a lot of sissy stuff in it. I like E [flat] clarine pretty well have lots of variations I will be glad when we get our new instruments Well a friend of mine is urging me to go for a walk so I will close I am your Loving Son P.S. I have quit smoking for a while I chew instead. [censor signature]
