[American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] December 16 1917 Dear Ma: Rec’d your letter of [November] 26 The first letter for quite a while I got the socks Tobac Ect OK about a wk. ago the wristlets are fine for playing out side in the cold. we play nearly every evening in the Y.M.C.A. and S.A. huts. I have a hike ahead of me tomorrow. The Tobac will last me a long time as I smoke very light I have friends that are not so fortunate. They treat me when they have something I havent. No a furlough wouldent be much good here if you get a pass for a big Town you are lucky. give Aunt Sue my best regards and tell her

I am still wearing the ring she gave me. So Leona has another son well I dont blieve it is good people of ordinary circumstances to have to many children unless they can provide for them properly. we had turkey for Thanksgiveing dont know whether we will get any for xmas or not. I have had a cold in my head couldent hear out of my right ear for a wk. I am O.K. now. some of the boys have Trench feet not bad though. The weather isent so very cold, but the dampness makes it uncomfortable. I havent heard from Pearl lately. I would have liked to have seen J Stemble Pearl sent me a couple of pairs of sox. we had slum for supper Think I will write a March and name it “Sluming the Samies”

[American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] I have practised quite a lot the last wk I am improveing a little Techniquely Keep Somers busy with Scales in all the keys I have ben playing in 7th I had a nice letter from Florence K She writes me once a mo. I spilt my ink to-night. a bottle cost’s about 35¢ here They charge the American boys double they are getting wize to it I think I am sory I cant send you any thing for xmas but will remember your birthday The picture I sent was taken while we were at the front. How are times in the U.S. how are the crops Ect. Is Rolin going to join the army?
