[American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] Aug 17 1917 Dear Ma – : I rec’d 2 letters from One stating you had heard from me. I Walked 2 ½ miles today and seen both those boys about writing home they both had and I wish you would write their folks and tell them I seen to it I know the One from [Kansas City] he is a tailor used to see him often when I played in cafe. sen an air plane battle today a Boech was observing us from a great hight when he went back. they had it they Were a long Way off so I dont know the out come. I am well you can knit me 2 pair of wool socks for Winter if you wish I will very likely get them if

you put it up in a good package. I also heard from Pearl Florence and Ellen Shaw. The Band is attached to the H. P. Corps Their Work is first aid. It is dangerous Work. We are playing Light Cav. Overture to-night We play everything from Grand Opera to the latest rag bits I think most of the soldiers like the later the best. I am glad somers likes to practice if she does Well she must go to [Kansas City] Conservitors later. I will have the F. N. Bank to settle my affairs as soon as the allotment reaches them I hope you are well and I was surprised that Grandma survived the Winter it is cool here days and cold at night I guess We are not a great way from Grandmas House The censors are indeed very busy. [American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] bit. it is comforting yes the soldiers got paid O.K. a few of them got a little to much (Vine Blanc) white wine) but as a whole I guess they behaved as good as could be expected I guess I Wrote in the Other letter I and my chum had a nice (bottle of champagne) Sunday dinner cost 5 1/2 F. A machine gun sounds just like an air Hammer on a rivet every night We go to sleep to the sound of a great Drum. that is What it sound’s like and is puncuated once in a while by a little heavier notte which I guess is one of the big fellows going off. When the anti air craft guns shoot at a plane, the shells leave a little puff of smoke in the air it looks like a game but it is shure a dangerous one

[Page 4] How is Beatrice and how did She do in school the last of the year? I have My Violin along but will not play any more till I get back if I do. We Will hope the best. This is a beautiful day We have lots of rain I hear they have two new preachers I hope they get on Well but I expect after a time it Will be the same old story.
