[Page 1] [Jefferson Barracks, Missouri] 4/17/17 Dear Ma I will give you a few events that hapened to me since I came. The first day we wer taken to a room and striped and lined up 50 of us at once We inspected from head to foot for defects I think I passed 100%. We had to hop on one leg around the room then on the other it was real funny then we put on our clothes and went to dinner after dinner we were striped to the waist and marched

[Page 2] in a room where a Man daubed our arm with Iodine then we went in to the doctors office whe there were three of them with Hypo sryinges each containg 500 units of Tyhoid germs. one big fellow fainted when the Dr. stuck it in his arm. I dident mind it much it dident hurt very bad. we then went to another Dr where we were vacinated. Mine dident take. we then came back to the first office and he stuck a longer needele just above the elbow into the artery and I saw 2 oz of my life blood pumped into

[Page 3] a little glass tube. we wer through for that day. it took all next day to fit uniforms and shoes and get fixed in our quarters each one has to take care of his bed Ect. Next Morning we were drilled in jumping and Marching I kenew the commands better than the rest as I had them in the Naval Militia in [Kansas City]. My civilian clothes violin Ect are stored in the q.m. office untill I am shipped out which will be about 10 days I think. recruits are coming in so fast we have to go out with out much training I am sory

[Page 4] I dident Join the army 2 or three years ago It isent bad and it is the only big job I was ever on that every one had to do his part I dident Come out and say good by because I knew it would make you feel bad I had to go so I just went. I may go to Mexico or [Honolulu] or Maine or mabe Ft. Leavenworth. I must quit the bugler is blowing taps. I had one dose of the kitchen I am a pretty good hash slinger I will now lay down to sleep in the arms of uncle samy. I have a fine rifle to drill with. Walter

Don’t write as I havent ben assigned to a reg. yet I am in the 15th co. We have to take a bath every day and obey orders. I havent but very little time to write I am busy every minute of the day
