[Jefferson Barracks] 4/12/17 Dear Ma. I am enclosing a Photo of My self I like the drills very much the only thing I dont like is kitchen work I played with the band this morning dident do very well - as I was unfamiliar with the Clarinet I had as they use high Pitch and mine is low. they may keepe my here for 6 mo on acct. of my playing violin for the officers dances we all have to tow the Mark or get in trouble we cant leave the grounds at all. being new men we are kept Constantley at drill or some thing the Civalians are

shure flocking in 200 Negros arrived this morning. [April] 14 they were shure funny a negro soldier here got promoted to sergant and promptly took charge of them they seem to larn fast I watched them drilling today I can see the bots on the [Mississippi] River as it is just about 100 yards from my Window. the barraks are about 6 miles from town. I hope they send me to [Honolulu]. I dont think the war with [Germany] will amount to much I must quit as I have to shave shine shoes and be read for inspection Dont write yet. Your Walter
