Oct 31 – 17 Hello Dad - : how are you? are you still at the plant I am Well. You have no doubt read in the papers that Our men are at the Front The Band is attached to the Hospital Corp’s I guess we will go up soon we played concert tonight was pretty chilly on the fingers. I can execut prety Keen on the clarinet now as we have ben playing some heavy music I havent got the Violin out guess I

Wont till we get back to the U.S. I guess there is a big army getting ready to come over. well they will have some trip. all the Women ride bicycles and work just like men I think they have made more money in these towns where the american soldiers are stationed. Than they have for the last 10 years I like France fairly Well dont think I would like to live here allways they have fine roads here. white and red wine can be bought for 1.50F a bottle (30c) some of the soldiers get tanked up on it I dont like it because it is so sour French people have it with every meal. Champagne can be bought for 9.00F a bottle $1.75 this is extra dry costs about $7.00 in the U.S. Beer costs .30 centines a bottle 10c. Tell uncle Joe hello for me I got a cartoon of Fatima Cigarettes from C.A. Shaws daughter we had had some Snow it rains neraly every day I have Hobb nail shoes they wear good. I dont suppose I Will be able to write every wk as I think we will

be Very busy to-night is Halloween. I had a time last year I dident think I would be here then I got the gum in the last letter we have 6 clarinets in our band also Picolo 2 saxaphones that is a pretty good reed section for a band of 25 we have a fine Solo Cornet player but he hasent any click in his heart. Well I guess I Will close as I cant Write any thing of interest as the cencor is very strict Your Son Walter [censor signature] A.E.F. Via New York Tell somers to use fountain [pen ink in her pen]
