[State of Kansas Adjutant General’s Department letterhead] February 15th, 1921 Mrs. Lizzette Shaw, 155 Armour str., Bonner Springs, Ks. Dear Madam: The War Department having sent this office all the records of Kansas soldiers who lost their lives in the great war, with the exception of a few scattering cases, we are at a loss to know why we have failed tor receive a record of your son, Walter Gray Shaw. Do you know postively that he gave Kansas as his residence when he enlisted and not Missouri? Any information you may have we will take up the matter with the War Department with the request that they investigate this case, should the soldier have enlisted from Missouri of course them, the matter will be handled by the Adjutant General of that state. Herewith find inclosed the letter and picture you so kindly sent to us and we regret exceedingly we are not able to use same, but the volumn “Kansas Casualties World War 1917-1919” now in the hands of the State Printer, contains only the names, date of enlistment, date and cause of death, organizations in which the soldier served, parents name and address. Thanking you for your thotfulness and hoping the record of your son may be secured by the state to which it belongs, we remain, Respectfully yours, [signed C.I. Martin] C.I.
