[Page 1] Sketch – Musician : Walter Gray Shaw son of John C. and Lizzette W. Shaw was born on a farm near Bonner Springs [Kansas] Jan 13 – 1896. He attended the rural home school also the school in Bonner Springs : He was a fine violin player and expected to study in Europe after the war Early in [April] 1917 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the [18th Infantry] Band. Was trained at Douglas [Arizona] Sailed for France June 10th with [General John J. Pershing's] 1st Division Letters from France told little about the discomforts of Trench and Field always cheerful – and sometimes he said Folks this is a great War “If you don’t weaken”

[Page 2] In [February] 1918 the [18th Infantry] Band together with the Bands of the Allied Nations toured Italy on a Propaganda tour visiting the principal cities, But were back in France when the March Offensive began. In [April] 1918 he was gassed while bringing in a wounded Lieutenant, but recoverd and was back on duty [October] 2 : he was killed in the Argonne Meuse : at Charpentry. it was a night bombardment a shell killed him and wounded 6 of his Comrades His body is buried in the National Cemetary at Romange [Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial] his Paternal Grand father and three uncles were veterans of the Civil War.
