Shaw, Walter Gray Collection

Walter Shaw enlisted in the U.S. Army at Jefferson Barracks on April 9, 1917, and was assigned to Company K, 18th Infantry Band.  Shaw frequently wrote home about his experiences which included service as a stretcher-bearer in France.  Gassed at Cantigny in April 1918, he returned to his duties on the front after a short recovery.  Shaw was killed in October 1918 during a night bombardment near the Argonne at Charpentry.  His collection includes a variety of correspondence, photographs, citations, and ephemera related to Shaw’s service and his mother’s Gold Star Pilgrimage to his burial site.
