Schroeder, Hugo Collection
Hugo Schroeder, of St. Louis, Missouri served with Company C, 140th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division. At the Battle of the Argonne he was wounded in the leg. After laying wounded on the battlefield for a day, Germans passing through the battlefield and began killing any American soldiers still alive. Schroeder, the son of German immigrants, could speak German and convinced them to spare his life. His right leg was eventually amputated while a Prisoner of War at the German POW Camp located at Rastatt, Germany. Schroeder also fought at the Battle of St. Mihiel. The collection consists of photographs, letters, and newspaper clippings from Schroeder’s military service.
