Bernard Rustemeyer was born on April 16, 1866, in Körbecke, Germany and immigrated to Hermann, Missouri, in 1882. He kept in close contact with friends and family who remained in Germany. The Rustemeyer family papers contain correspondence written to Bernard Rustemeyer from family and friends in Germany. The letters provide an excellent portrayal of the conditions of Germany after WWI. Several letters discuss the reasons for the war, from the perspective of German citizens. The letters are in German, but have been transcribed in German and translated into English.
