[The Army and Navy Club letterhead] Confidential. My request to Mr Baker was due to your advice given in May when Roosevelt wanted to go. August 18/[1917] My dear Frank Yours of the 15th came today. Had I known you were in St. Louis I should have looked you up. After hurrying all my hope and ambition with my poor wife at [ms illegible: 1wd], I returned to St Louis with Genevieve and spent Sunday and Monday at my brother in law

Description Letter from William H. Johnston to Frank M. Rumbold concerning the development of a National Guard composite division. General Mann would command the 42nd Division, which consisted of soldiers from different states. Frank Meeker Rumbold served as Colonel of the 128th Field Artillery during World War I. He later served as Adjutant General of Missouri from 1925 to 1927.
