A.P.O. 743 France. December 26, 1918. My dear Mrs Rumbold, I cannot tell you what a pleasure it was to receive your kind card for Xmas and coming as it did just at this time away over here I shall treasure it as one of my best remembrances. We of the 128th have made some wishes also since the later part of September but so far they have not come true but

[page 2] we will continue to hope and wait and some of these days when things again become normal there will be a reckoning. Of course I refer to the Colonel and believe me when I say that the whole regiment are still loyal and only wait for a chance to try to repay a little of what our Colonel has done for us. What a wonderful army it would be if all the officers were like him.

[page 3] Such an army could defeat Germany and all the other Allies with ease. Were it not for him there would not be any 128th, and the fighting spirit they showed in those hellish days in the Argonne, as due to the force and leadership and courage which he made us younger officers feel and pass on to the ranks, under us.
