[Y.M.C.A. letterhead] October 22 1918 Dear Colonel, It was with great disappointment that, upon our leaving the line, I heard of your leaving for the hospital. We are hoping to have you back with us in the near future as all realize what an example your were to us. The old fighting spirit of the old battery has shown throughout the whole regiment and the men lived up to all the old traditions and fought just the way I know you would have had them. As you have often said, the time came when we had to buckle

In the thick of the hottest of shell fire, that seems impassable, they brought up the savages, at times having the very horses shot out from under them. Sergt. Britsel had two shot from under him, only one of the many. The world will never know how many real brave men were brought out in that last fight. It sure was a real one too, no amateurs that. The division commander cited ours Reg. with several others for actions in that fight Several of our officers were cited. Major R. for one I wish I could relate in

detail our part in it For my part I think that you Colonel and all St Louis can be proud that you produced such a fighting outfit. Our General has at last admitted that you had a real firing unit. I wish you the most pleasure for the holidays that is possible, Your gunner
