American Expd Force Base Hospital #31 France [October] 28 1918 My dear Col Rumbold: I can not tell you how I felt when I got back and found you gone it didnt seem like things could be the same, but I made my mind that at least one batallion would live up to your traditions and we sure got all that was comeing to us. We were ordered out in an advanced position and suffered pretty heavy but come through with flying colores so you can be satisfied with your boys. I also know that you will be glad to know that I have been cited in orders for works done during that time. The last day I got a good shot of Mustard Gas but stuck for twenty hours afterwards on the job and only gave up when we were relieved and ordered back at which time I was blind, but it only lasted forty eight hours and I hope that in a week I will be back on duty. I have been trying ever since I got here to locate you and just found out today where you were so you see I have wasted no time. Now how are you geting along I wish I could see you as I have some very interesting things to tell you, and also I would like to know when we are going to have your back. If it is possible I will try and get up there to see you before I return as it will be a cure for sore eyes to see and have a chat with you.
