Dan letter to Frank M. Rumbold - December 29, 1918

Transcript
December 29, 1918 Dear Colonel,- Just returned from a leave. Went down to Nice with Colonel Warner. Had a wonderful time and feel that the trip was really an exceptional opportunity. We had a most delightful time. Stopped off in Paris on our way, met Miss Livingston and she told us that Miss Day was in Paris. Called at her hotel but was unable to get in touch with her as she was out on some duty. Am quite disappointed to learn that you are going back in charge of a casual detachment. Even though we received a R.A. Colonel some time ago I felt that you, the same as Rumsey and the rest of the officers would come back. In fact I wrote Mrs Rumbold that we expected you to come in any day and tell us that you would take the outfit to St Louis

By the way things look now it is hard to tell whether we are to go home or go in. Before I left they had sent our guns and equipment back to a railhead and taken all our horses for the 3rd army but upon my return I find the guns back and sufficient horses and mules to handle them. We are still up in the woods to the south east of Verdun right where we were when the armistice was signed. Have moved out of the gun positions and dugouts to the huts and billets at our old echelons. Are quite unrestricted except for the inconvenience of supply due to our distance from the division. Just heard that General Traub had been relieved. Your friend General Dugan of the 70th brigade (formerly Col Dugan of San Antonio) is in command temporarily. Gen Berry still has the brigade and our present K.O. is Col Taylor formerly captain of coast artillery. Major Sandford has the first battalion and Rumsey is attached. Practically all of the officers that went to the hospital or were detached for school work have been returned to the regiment. The men are in excellent health and good spirits. Outside the rain and mud we are in fine shape. The batteries did some excellent shooting when in action and all in all we have a pretty good reputation as a shooting and fighting regiment and every one seems to be holding right up to the mark during this period of marking time. Will you express my regards to Mrs Rumbold and my best wishes to you both for a Happy New Year! Sincerely Dan
