[National Guard Missouri letterhead] August 29, 1917. From: The Commanding General. To: Colonel F.M. Rumbold, First Missouri Field Artillery. Subject: Service rendered the National Guard. 1. Personally and on behalf of the Missouri National Guard I desire to express unbounded appreciation o the very great service rendered the National Guard of this state during the period of your detail with the Militia Bureau. To your unsparing and disinterested efforts in behalf of every organization the service is due in very large measure the strength and efficiency of the National Guard upon its call into the federal service. Your suggestions to me as Commanding General ere so opportunely made and so well considered that they were invaluable. You did not content yourself with performing the full duty for which you were detailed; you went beyond that and trespassed upon time which most officers would have given to rest and recreation. You fought for the Missouri National Guard as you have fought for it all your life; your constant effort was to make every unit efficient and to assist in every possible way every deserving officer. The result shows how faithfully you worked and how well considered were your efforts. 2. In this connection it may be remarked that the entire National Guard of the United States owes you a debt of gratitude. You knew what to do, when to do it, and it was done. 3. For your unselfish, patriotic and loyal service your comrades in the Guard will be every grateful and they wish for you every good thing which should come to one who has not only bent his every effort, but who has been able to make such efforts successful.
