[Chatellon-Sur-Cher] [December 8, 1918] Dear Sister! This being Sunday gives me time to catch up with some of my delayed letter writing. It is a cold dreary day with the sun shining at short intervals. Have been doing nothing but cleaning all morning such as my self, my clothes, rifle and equipment. It is just a month today that the Henderson dropped anchor in the port of Brest, though it seems but a week. The letter of Kates I received last week surely surprised me as to its time on the way.

Am wondering what kind of Christmas you all have had and how much the goose weighted, how old the fruit cake was, and who trimmed the tree. Dont forget to save me some of mothers famous butter cakes. The only thing resembling a good cake we get is one that the Y. people sell at one Franc per package of twenty, which in American money is just now about eighteen cents. But there good with a cup

anywhere from six to ten Francs It is best though to do so in parties of four or six, as it is rather lonesome to sit in with a family and not know what they are talking about, while with a gang of your own a lot of fun can be had, especially after the fourth or fifth round of Vin Rouge (red wine). I suppose Herbert H. had a many a meal of that kind before going into battle, as the 5th and 6th Regiments went through here. Give my regards to Emma and Christine and tell
