[American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] St. Nazaire [April] 7th 1919. Dear Mother: and All! Nothing new to write, but have witnessed a lot more to tell after what had happened here last night. It sure was one eventful night. I received the G.O. and Watchmans Advocate yesterday-noon but have not seen a letter for two weeks. The county paper is what interested me mostly it containing a lot of news of that nature. We are having very good weather now. It has not rained for three days and the sun is bright and warm and the waves on the beach are calling. It will not be long untill we will be able to take advantage of the surf.

I have been trying for a leave of seven days to Beritz or St. Malo but as yet have been out of luck There are about fourteen leaves granted a month. The names are written on a small piece of paper and put in a hat after which a drawing is made. Leaves to Paris are also being granted but they are few. The trips to Bertitz and St. Malo are at the Governments expense but that of Paris must be paid by the soldier. We are doing the same guarding and drilling with the chances of going home far away. I am very anxious to get home, but some of the boys are crabbing to beat all. They are out of luck, crabbing wont get them home any faster and on the other hand they are not having it very hard here. How is every body? I suppose you are all busy

[page 2] [American Y.M.C.A. letterhead]in the garden. There at it over here and some gardens are very pretty but small. Most of the ground here is put to use for wine. Went out to the hospital yesterday-noon to see a friend who has bronchitis. There are quite a few patients out there from all over. Some in very bad condition. What impressed me most was the fact that very little medicine is used mostly - rest - fresh air - diet and salts. Later on I went down to the Carnival were the fun was going on. Will tell you all about it when I get home We didnt get to bed untill midnight. We just stood-by waiting for results.
