[American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] St. Nazaire [March 30, 1919] Dear Dad! Sunday afternoon and I just finished a four hour watch. It was a cold rainy watch and seemed as though my releif would never come. Am enclosing a clipping I found in the [March] 1st number of the Literary Digest which I thought would interest you. In asmuch as it was published without hinderance I dont think Mr Censor will destroy it. You know we spent a week there and it is one I never will forget, and what this soldier writes is true, there is not one bit of exaggeration and there is a lot more that he does not mention. He writes of how it was when he was there (January) but we were there in November before they had the improvements they

now have. Conditions were bad at [Chatellon-Sur-Cher], but being there was like heaven to us. Now it is different we are living in clean barracks have the best of food, can keep clean and have lot of amusements and warm clothes. We are living the way the Marine Corps intends to have us live and not the X.Y.Z.
