[American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] July 19th 1919. St. Nazaire. Dear Dad! Well we made our move alright but it was somewhat contrary to what thirty five of us expected. After we went through all the formalities of the different inspections and were given a farewell speech by Col. Olsen and Maj. Miller we were informed that we were from there on members of g. co. 13th Regt. Those transfered consisted of two Sargents four Corporals and twenty nine privates and I want to tell you we were some sore bunch, but since we have a little the best of the deal. The 11th and 13th Regt. are quite a few men short and replacements will have to be made from the Dock Guard Battalion All Marines are too assemble at Brest and Regt

[page 2] [American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] the balance of our old Battalion will be placed in some Co. of either the 11th or 13th after they reach Brest. Now in asmuch as they or we had to be split up sometime or another, I think we have the advantage, because the balance who left for Brest last night will be under direct command of Brig. Gen. Butler and will have to drill and soldier in a damm military way. while we who are on detatched duty here are only under a Captain, and are the only soldiers in a camp of which at one time consisted of 40,000 men. We were left behind to guard Govt property until the French soldiers relieve us. We live in the former officers club have spring bunks, mattresses and pillows, 4 painos, a victrola

After staying at Brest probably four days we will sail for the States which should bring us in the States about [August] 10th. Dont send anything but letters to me as they may never get to me.
