[Y.M.C.A. letterhead] [September] 20 – 1918 6 30 P.M. My Darling One : - This has been a beautiful day and we have not been very busy. Less to do than any day that I have been here. So Iwent over to Des Moines this afternoon with Lt. Parish in his Car. (Closed Buick) It is a fine drive, paved street entire distance. Is a very pretty city. Wish we had Car here. The Country is very pretty around here. Got some idea of the City and locations. Now as to your last letter and Marians. Iwrote you some things in my letter of yesterday as to the policy of bringing Marian. Will leave this to you. If you plan to do any

Will look up the board proposition if it can be done as that would be the Easiest way for you if you can get decent board. Will also try to find out about the school. This is the first time I have been away from Camp. We had to ask permission to go there. Will go up tomorrow evening after supper on the Interurban if nothing prevents and try to find out some of the things you ask about. All these furnished Apartments have everything I am told Except bed linens and towels. You can have the sheets that I brought if you need them as I have not used them and do not Expect to. Boarding would be the thing if you

[Page 2] Can get good board. It seems that they have furnished a good many Apartments here for the use of Army Men and do not require any lease and furnishings are Complete. Do not have to bring silver. Would be alright to put Car down town as you suggest or rent Space. They have more room at the [MS illegible: 1 word] garage than St. Johns. Will write you more fully Sunday as Iwill have more time to find out the things you enquire about tomorrow. They are making some Changes in the Camp Management here that I think occasions the lack of work today. We were supposed to have

a lot of it. If they do not Change the ruling as to our staying in town one night Imay not be able to Come in every evening. The allies do not seem to be Making Much progress the last few days. Wish they Could move up a bit. The Man here had My bed out airing it today and Ipresume gave the blankets Etc a shaking. Wont know how to live in a house like ours by the time Ihave Kept this up 2 or 3 yrs. Hate to think of it being that long, but it May be. Was up in the building where Dr. Biering has his office today, but did not go in. you remember Dr. Hench Mentioned him He is a Son inlaw to Mrs - Hope to get a letter tomorrow.
