November 8, 1918 Mrs. Everett Powers, Carthage, Mo My Own Darling Wife : - Began this with a typewriter but Concluded that Ihad best wait until I learned to use one of this Kind. It is the Royal, they seem to use More of them here than any other Kind am homesick to see you tonight. Certainly wish Icould, but as Ican not, the next best thing is in writing toyou. Well, first My surmise of the report yesterday is true. No peace yet. It may Come in a few days, but if so, the Armies of the Allies have got to make some telling blows on the battlefield. The Germans are not yet ready for any Kind of peace, but they will have to begin to get ready for the decision will be forced on them soon. We had our picture tuck this afternoon. Am anxious to see it. It includes the Medical Officers and the Enlisted Men of the Medical Corps of the Depot Brigade. I imagine Many of us will be Squint eyed as we were facing toward the sun. They have another dance in [Des Moines] for the Medical Officers of the Camp tonight. Idid not go. May have to go next time. A number of the Medical Officers of the Depot B. are not in Camp now. So they will not appear in the Photo today. Three of them left today with troops. Iam Officer of the Day. Sunday. Isn’t it funny. Would have been O.D. [written upside down in top margin] Just heard the Explosions in the trenches where Lt. Sathe is taking tonight in gas school Course. Sound pretty loud. can see the Moon out of My big window so guess it isn’t going to rain much. Wish that you would look and see when my Commission is dated. Ithink it is July 26th but am not sure. Again Much love. Devotedly. E.
