Dr. Everett Powers letter to Marian Powers - Dec. 5, 1918
Transcript
[Dubuque College Dubuque, Iowa letterhead] [December] 5, 1918 Dubuque, [Iowa]. My darling wife:- Sent you a letter this morning, but will begin another tonight. Think now that I will be held up here until sometime next week, possibly the middle. Only got through with 25 today and may not get any tomorrow as some of the necessary papers are not here. May have to lie around and wait. Isn’t it the limit, should have made it 75 today. I could make it more but they can not get through with the record end of it and it must all go along together, as the discharge must follow the examination (physical) promptly. It may be a whole week, but I had hoped to get back to [Camp Dodge]. Sunday night. Not that I am crazy to get back there, but would like to get away from here. This is certainly a picturesque place and you would love the wonderful views, if you had some way of getting to them without walking. Seattle isn’t in it with this place. I never saw a place of this size that was as easy to get lost in. Is really funny. Paid my bill at the Hotel and am now quartered up here in Lovas Hall, the [Students Army Training Corp] of Dubuque College. Get my meals up here too. The meals are very good and my room doesn’t cost anything. So you

can see reason. Meals same as at [Camp Dodge]. If it was Chicago could stay here a week or two. Nearly everthing here is Catholic, I mean in Dubuque. This is a Catholic institution. Capt. Rice the Commanding officer (live) is not. He has been very nice to me. Wish that you could see the views from this building. The other college also has some fine views. They are all up on top of hills, which is not hard to find here. They also have some girls schools here. Also on hills. The hotel where I stopped last night is nicer than any [Des Moines] hotel. Lobby something like the Muehlbach. Am anxious to hear from you seems like a long time and it was only Tuesday. It is cold here. Melted some little in the sun today, but the wind was cold. They have some immense buildings in these schools. My room is no 350 and is on the 3rd floor, really the 4th if you count the basement, which is mostly above ground. Do not know how many rooms there are, but a lot. Is an interesting experience but want to see you. My room at the hotel was too warm and here I am too cold. No half way doings. Hope things are O.K. at home, If I knew I was to be in [Camp Dodge] several weeks yet would have you come to [Des Moines] for a week or so. think you might get something later out of it in a Musical way. Am hoping when I get back that my order for discharges will be there. Just lots of love. Devotedly, Everett.
