[Julien Dubuque Hotel letterhead] 9:30 P. M. Address care Dubuque College [Dubuque, Iowa] [December] 4th, 1918 My Darling wife: - Well here I be. In the armee. Left [Camp Dodge] at 620 this morning arriving here at 3.P.M. Came to this Hotel cleaned up a bit and started out to see what I had to do. Find that I have 279 to examine. So will not get away from here before Sunday or Monday in all probability. Did not get out of sight of snow today. Is not so heavy over here on the river as it is farther back in state. Lots of ice here, some creeks frozen over and ground white all the way to within 20 or 30 miles of this place. Was still a lot of snow in [Camp Dodge] and death. May not get to write you very much while I am here as I have lots of work to do. Have to look over all of these papers after we get them made out. Is some

responsibility which I have assume entirely. I am Chief Cook and Bottle washer here, but not in Washington, so have to make it go for them. Will take up my abode at Dubuque College tomorrow until I get through here. Will sleep there and get my meals there also. This is a Catholic institution and the other one a Protestant. The Captain and commanding officer, used to be at Camp Dodge. Is a very nice man and think that we will make it fine. He does not like Dubuque. Is a place of about 40000 people, largely Catholic. Is up and Down, very rough, some fine views. One Hill Iclimbed this afternoon puts Prague Hill in the shade. Would love to drive around here and see some of the views. The [Commanding Officer] here says they are as fine as any he ever saw, and he has traveled much; am anxious tohear form you again. Lt Neumann will forward any letters coming there you can at least send one letter to me here after you get this. Will write you something again tomorrow. Goodnight. Lots of love. Devotedly [Everett].
