[Dubuque College Dubuque, Iowa letterhead] Tuesday Morning, [December] 17th, 1918. Dubuque, Iowa. My darling Girl:- Here goes another letter. If nothing prevents will be on my way back to Camp Dodge this afternoon. Think Capt. Rice think that I have been rather foolish about wanting to get away from here. He rather likes this kind of life I think and can not understand why others do not. I sent you a set of views in my letter of last night and did not mention or comment, as I just had time to get in the mail. The German College is now called Dubuque College and Seminary, is one of the schools I came here to demobilize its unit. Is a Presbytarian Institution. This does not show much of its school as they have some very nice buildings. Loras Hall, is where I am staying, intended, to mark my room but did not have time. This is part of Dubuque college where they have the students Army Training Camp. St. Josephs is the main building. Is a Catholic institution, I mentioned Eagle Point where we have such a fine View. Also, from the bridge near there. Will explain the others when I see you. Will send you Curts letter, as I answered it last night. Am glad that you feel that your home is a comfortable place. Would hate to think that I had not provided you with a reasonably good abode. Am mighty sorry that we are pestered with the abominabel stock running loose, when I get home will at least try to put a stop to it. All of the boys have gone from here except 26. Four of these will be transferred to some other place for treatment before they are discharged. Several of the Doctors are home here from Camps, but one has been sick all the time, and the others are N. G. Dr. Gratiot asked for immediate discharge same as I did, and has heard nothing of it yet. He is at Fort [Des Moines]. Mrs. G. Said he did not know when he would be home. She went over and spent Thanksgiving with him. They have a Dodge Touring car. He had a Packard, before he went away, but sold it.Expects to get another car on his return. Will seem funny to go back to that cot [written sideways in the margin, follows text on page 2]: If I could only be content to read could put in the time but I want to get out of here. Do not blame Capt R. for he wants to play safe. Will get your letters [written accross top margin]: when I get back to [Camp Dodge]. Not even a picture show I care to see. Have just seen Mary Pickford in the picture she is in here. Just lots of love, your devoted but unhappy Hubby.

after two weeks of a real bed, but will have more heat in the room than they have here. I hate the smoke and dirt there though, is much cleaner here than at [Camp Dodge] or Des Moines. Of course when you were there they did not have the fires going as they have now and it was not so dirty in either place. Will be mighty glad to get back home, where I have have the things comfy once more. Will seem odd to put on civilian clothes again. 4 P. M. Well my dearest here I am again. Had everything in my grip, ready to leave and then Capt. Rice would not release me. Rec’d a telegram which required him to hold the 22 men he was to discharge today. Will probably be Friday before they are discharged in which case I am tied here. Does not want to assume the responsibility of something happening to the men and I guess I have to stay. Is almost certain now that I wont get home for Xmas. Isn’t it the limit? I haven’t a thing to do here unless something happens to these men. Do not even have to attend [MS illegible: 2 words],but would have to make out papers as to disposition to be made. Am afraid that I will soon be ready for Neveda. Can not even sit down and read the Saturday E. Post. Can not get my mind on it may get away Thurs. but I doubt it. Wish I might [written sideways in the margin] see you and talk this thing out. Have a lot of things to tell you which in all likelihood I won’t get a chance to do even when I do see you.
