[Y.M.C.A. letterhead] 9 30 P.M. [November] 18 – 1918 MyDarling Wife : - Will begin a letter to you tonight and finish it tomorrow. am getting to be a regular gad about. As we just got back from a picture show on the hill. (Lt. Dye was the rest of we) It was the “House of Mirth” from a Novel. Think the title a Misnomer, as it was anything but the House of Mirth. Suppose you Know the story so will not describe, but in the picture the woman does not succeed in the Suicide as she does in the book. It goes without saying that Idid not Care for the picture as Ido not like the Kind. It is the limit here when we are not busy. Sit around all day on one of those folding Chairs, then Come to our quarters and do the same or sit on our beds. And tonight the wind is blowing from the Arctic regions and the building is Cold. Can see our finish if we have to stay here all winter. will have to go tobed every night we are here to get warm if it is at all Cold. The Y is not usually very warm when the weather is Cold as it is heated by one large stove. Imean the Officers room. Have not heard anything about the gas Course this week. Iwant to get out of it Now if Ican, as there is no special use for it. We are all uncertainty here as to just what is going to take place. 1 15 P.M. No letter this noon hope for one this afternoon. Am going with Lt. Dye to the Princess tonight. wish you were here to go with me. He is going this afternoon and will get the tickets. Iwill not go until after supper and then will have a Chance to get my letter. Is still gloomy and Chilly out, Nearly raining, Another rumor at noon. Will tell you tomorrow, if there is anything to it. Absolutely No News here. Did you ever pay Gene for that O.D. wool shirt? 8 30 A.M. [November] 19th 1918. Well MyDearest, this is another blustry, dismal Morning, and Nothing doing here, just waiting the morning paper is not encouraging, says this will be one of the last Cantonments to disband. Some of the men here seem towant to stay in the Army this winter, but that is not me. Iam willing tostay as long as Iam apparently needed, but No longer. Even if Idid not need the Extra Money Iwould not want to be away from home. Hope that you will get the East door fixed. Imay be home in time to fire the furnace some, and shovel snow again. troops, did Not go South of Jacksonville, Florida. So am glad Itook the other trip as Igot tosee you and if Ihad taken the other trip would not. The [Des Moines] Capital had about Six lines write up of the Stanley recital, and that Not until the Monday issue, She Sang Friday. What do you think of that? Was just talking to another Captain who has been doing Eye, Ear N&T work for Several years. He has had the Officers training Course and been in Service over a year. Has never had an assignment in this work. So Iam not alone. They do anything to get you in and then do as they please. Just lots of love. Devotedly, Everett
