[American Y. M. C. A. letterhead] 8:20 A. M. Monday [December 2, 1918] My Darling wife:- While I am waiting for the mill to get up steam am going to start a letter to you so that I can ger it off today. This morning it is more like spring: than for a week or two. I think much of the snow will go today. The river froze ice. Was much surprised yesterday in going to [Des Moines] to see lots of ice in the river. Did not realize that it has been so cold. Left here on the 3 0’C train yesterday and went up and called on Mrs. Wild at the Lexington Apts. The rest of the folks were out so that I did not meet them. Looks, from the furniture that they are permanent occupants. In other words does not look like a furnished

apartment. They have a 2nd floor front. Have one of those perpetual motion elevators. I walked up to save time. Mrs. Wild is very pleasant, but I do not place her. She seemed to know me and spoke as though she had been in my office. Went from there over to the Lorernz . They had invited Dr. Grimes and wife to dinner. Mrs. G. came in about an hour late, but the Dr. was too busy with the Flu. Came for her at ten, so that I met him. I was just taking my leave when he came. Mrs. Grimes wanted to be remembered to you. We had a vey nice dinner prepared by Mrs. L. Hardly a dinner and more than the usual lunch. Both Mrs. L. and Mrs. Wild are anxious to come out and see how we live also as a [written horizontally on page]: side issue [MS illegible: 1 word] with me
