Description Sidney Towner Phelan, a St. Louis, Missouri native, volunteered to be an ambulance driver for the French Army during WWI. Phelan saved these photographs while serving in France. The first photograph features his unit's flag or fanion decorated with the six Croix de Guerre and fourrageres. The names embroided on the fanion are for the actions in which the unit won citations. The second photograph features Phelan's unit.
