Headquarters November 20th, 1917 General Order 63”F” Bureau of Personnell Decorations No. 237 The General and Commander in Chief had decided that the Units here after designated will have the right to carry the Collective Decoration with the Colors of the Cross of the War 60th Battallion of the Infantry American Sanitary Section No. 5/646 These Units have received two citations from The Order of the Army for their brilliant conduct in front of the enemy. Citations. 1.-The following has been received from the Headquarters, A.E.F. “ The Commander in Chief has noted with pleasure the splendid work done by S. S. U. 646, which has twice caused it to be cited in French Orders, and thereby won for it the award of the Fourragere. It gives me great pleasure to communicate to you the text of the General order No. 65 “F”, by which the General awards the fourragere (a cord for the shoulder) in the colors of the ribbon of the Croix de Guerre (War Cross)to the American Sanitary Section No. 5 who have received the two citations to the Order of the Army for their splendid conduct before the enemy. From the General Order No. 68 The Commander in Chief of the 2nd Army The American Sanitary Section No. 5 (Harjes) Acted during a period of 11 days of combat, from the 8th to the 20th of March with defiance of all danger, in the evacuations in a zone which was very bombarded by the enemy artillery. In addition all its personnel proved that they demonstrated self sacrifice and a remarkable endurance for a period of 19 hours per day, giving their maximum endurance. General Staff. 1rst Bureau Certificate of the General Command No 218 The Commander in Chief of the 3rd Army Corp THE AMERICAN SANITARY SECTION No 5 (Formation Harjes) The American Section is very courageous and very dedicated, it worked in a very dangerous section, under continual bombardment, and carried away the injured from the Division. It had two very injured drivers and seven of its vehicles were hit by explosions with shrapnel. They have been cited previously. FRENCH ARMY LETTERS THE AMERICAN SANITARY SECTION No 5/646 66th DIVISION General Staff Certificate of the General Command Commander in Chief of the 66th Division The General Division. THE AMERICAN SANITARY DIVISION No5/646 Fornation Harjes. Division managed by the American Chief Adjunct Thayer DRAKE, newly assigned to the 66th Division. It had the opportunity to function for the first time with the Division during the attack of the 30th of the July and during the counter attacks of the following days. It was immediately remarkable in evacuating the wounded with maximum rapidity over routes which were excessively and violently bombed, giving in this way proof of their exceptional excellence, cold blood and courage. U. 5/646 with the French Army. 6th Army General Order No. 539 General Quarters First Bureau No. 396 R Has Cited to the Order of the Army THE AMERICAN SANITARY SECTION 5/646 Elite personnel which has demonstrated during the attack from October 23rd to 26th , the highest order of duty. It assured that in the smallest amount of time, in spite of considerable material difficulties, evacuated all the injured of the Division, on the routes barely passable and submitted to violent bombardment. The achieved these remarkable results through showing contempt of all danger through their exceptional physical and emotional endurance. General Quarters of the Army of the North and North East General Staff Bureau of Personell Decorations No. 2056 Order No. 10887 “ D” After having been approved by the Commander in Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, the Commander in Chief of the French Army of the North and North East, has given the citation to the Division of the American Army As follows The American Sanitary Section No. 5/646 They were designated to reinforce the American Sanitary Section 589 to help them to evacuate from the D.I. during the operations which they performed from the 18th to the 28th of July 1918 . The American Sanitary Section 5/646 participated without hesitation, during the dangers and the fatigues of bringing to the injures the precious benefits of a rapid evacuation. THE AMERICAN SANITARY SECTION No. 6/46 Under the direction and the exemplary conduct of its Chief, the Lieutenant DRAKE Ervin, the S.S.U. 646 has demonstrated a remarkable spirit and a self sacrifice without boundaries, which have caused admiration of the neighboring divisions, during the operations from September 26 to October 1, 1918. In spite of the material difficulties they faced danger without hesitation with untenable zeal from all its conductors, to evacuate, with perfect regularity in the day time and at night, without any respite, not only of all the injured of the Division, but they found the energies to do the same from the neighboring divisions. GENERAL QUARTERS OF THE FRENCH ARMIES OF THE EAST BUREAU OF PERSONNEL (DECORATIONS) March 21, 1919. Order No. 150 “F” Extract After the approval of the Commander in Chief of the French Expeditionary Forces and after the application for the Circulars of February 22, 1918, the French Marshall and Commander in Chief of the Armies of the East, have decided that American Units wil be able to carry the colors of the Military Medalss. This Sanitary Section has obtained through its brilliante exploits four citations of the Order of the Army. Colors from the Ribbond of the Armie’s Cross. American Sanitary Section 539 American Sanitary Section 625 Lafayette Squadron 124. They obtained these citations because of their excellent conduct in the presence of the enemy. The Marshall and Commander in Chief of the Armies of the East.PETAIN Copy of Order granting Section 646 the right to wear the Fourragere in the colors of the Medaille Militaire.
