[September] 9, 1918 [censor’s stamp] Dearest Mother, The mail has been good lately. Today I got your letter of [August] 18 and Nenaine's of [August] 13. Fall seems to be coming on awfully fast.. Already there is a coolness in the air not at all suggestive of summer. And with the coolness comes rain every day we have a storm or a downpour. I got another copy of the

[St. Louis Post Dispatch] That makes about the fourth I have received so far. I do appreciate them when they come. Elizabeth is enlisting in a three year government nursing school for work in the States. You asked about my friends so here goes sketch number three. Bob Wyant like Tiley he comes from New England and the two are the closest chums.

He was an engineering student before coming over. He and Tiley are identical in their viewpoints conservative and strong for things as they are established but at the same time broadminded and fair. Bob is a man you can absolutely depend on. In fact everything I wrote concerning Tiley is true of Wyant except that Tiley has a more positive personality. The thing for Roger to do is enlist in the ambulance service it is the service in which personal initiative, reliability and character count most and physical strength least. There are times though when plenty of the latter are demanded. I think Roger would fit in this life. He can drive a car, he has the knack of getting along with people, and is ready to do things on his own hook. Lots of love, Towner
