May 13, 1918 Dearest Mother, [censor’s stamp] I have a pretty clear remembrance of this day last year. I smashed up Gene's Ford in the morning. We had a little party. I left in the middle of it not the proper way to treat guests but I didn't care. I got a package containing playing cards and sugar. The cards are just what

I wanted. I am sending the sugar to May Birkhead civilians have such a hard time getting any. I am going to send you a bunch of requests for things not that I need anything now but for future use. It was you, I suppose, who sent the cards. If not thank whoever it was for me. This part of France is certainly most beautiful

at this time of year. The roads around here remind me of Bay St. Louis white ribbon like and always the rows of tall trees on either side. We are in a little river valley you couldn't imagine a more peaceful looking place and not the name of that river is one of the two actions that stands for the great fighting of this war. It's a funny world. Jack Carter came around to tell me goodbye the other day. His section is moving to a particularly nasty sector and is famous for its mud. Did I mention that on the 11th I received four letters from you two dated April 16 and April 22nd. Lots of love, Towner
