May 1, 1918 Dearest Mother, [censor’s stamp] I have not received much mail lately. Had a letter from you day before yesterday and one from Nenaine and one from Val. I also got that book on bridge. Thanks lots. It's just what I wanted. We are still at the rear work and as far as I know with no immediate

prospect of anything else. I am kept fairly busy which is a good thing as it leaves me less time to be disgusted with this rear work. We were issued some British tommy uniforms today. In some ways they are better than ours but I had a h _ of a time getting a not too near fit. I have a couple more of those pictures but they are packed away. The

first time I dig into my things I will get them out and send them. These new fellows with us can ask some foolish questions. The other day a French plane flew over so low you could bring it down with a cat rifle and one of the fellows asked if it was a bosche. I haven't heard from Fax yet. I think I ought to get word of him pretty soon. I hope we can spend our permission together. Lots of love, Towner
