June 18, 1918 [censor’s stamp] Dearest Mother, There is really nothing to tell you. We are still in the same place working hard at rear work. It's a steady grind without the variety and excitement you get at front work. I am rather curious to see what front work is like under totally different conditions of warfare. I have reason to believe it's quite as exciting probably a lot more so. Permission is delayed and so I am still waiting for

mine. There seems to be a belief in the section that the impediment will be removed and we will get a division and front work. It would be unthinkable if we had to do this for the rest of the war. Of course some section will have to do it then why not give the work to French sections or green men from Allentown. I am greatly impressed by the fact that Val is actually flying. I think he will make a name

for himself. Hope he goes into the chasse end of the game though I would like mighty well to see him drop some tons of H. E. all over the cities of the Rhine. I have seen a little intensive bombing not the sort of air raids I have been inclined to ridicule. I can tell you the thing for the Bosche is more of his own medicine than he can take. He is up to his old trick of bombing hospitals. It's mighty good to read of Americans in the line in sectors that are not exactly quiet. How long before there are three or four millions over here when that time comes we will have enough for the business in hand. The ones I have seen look like splendid soldiers. Have you noticed that a battalion or regiment (I don't know which) of U. S. Marines have won the fourragere? Lots of love, Towner
