July 4th, 1918 [censor’s stamp] Dearest Mother, Ignoring the fact that the section has been in the field for several years and has had the section flag Steve Pell has given the section a French and an American flag. They are beautiful flags but the date is a little late for them to come this place as flags of the section. However, this afternoon he is going to post

them to the section and have them blessed and pinned up with the decorations belonging to the section flag. To add to the horror there will be a bunch of women and officers around to witness the inappropriate affair. I am very fond of Steve but I have a feeling of horror toward his habit of parading us around with flags etc. I expect to start on my permission tomorrow or the day after. I can't

go to Paris though I tried my best to make it. I will go straight to Aix les Bains. From all I hear it is a great place but I don't know anybody there that's my main objection. We are still tied up with the Allentown bunch shoved in on us. Until they go we have no hope of getting a division. We expect them to leave soon I hope so this section has had enough rotten luck. It's time it changed. It's certainly great to hear how well Val is doing. I surely want to see him over here soon. I am putting in a request for a bunch of stuff. Lots of love, Towner
