[American Y.M.C.A. letterhead] July 14, 1918 Dearest Mother, My permission is nearly over. I have had a most wonderful time. Played a lot of tennis, danced some, went to the opera, took sight seeing trips etc. Aix is a great place to have a good time. The best part of permission is the change new faces, and a new

mode of life. Another man from the section is down here now. He tells me we are back in the old regimen. The extra men and cars have left and all the many evils they entailed. The morale of the section is now sky high. We feel that now that our spell of bad luck is once broken that everything will come our way again. Lots of love, Towner

Description | Sidney Towner Phelan, a St. Louis, Missouri native, wrote this letter to his Mother while serving as a volunteer ambulance driver in France during World War I. In this letter, Phelan described what he did on leave such as playing tennis, dancing, etc. Phelan also mentioned he had received word that his section was back with its old regiment. |
