[St. Remi Country Club letterhead] August 1st, 1918 [censor’s stamp] Dearest Mother Yesterday I got that package you sent through Scruggs. Thanks lots it had some chocolate and cakes in it. Of course you know now that you can't send anything direct but anything you want to send me can be sent to May Birkhead and she can forward it to me. That would be much more satisfactory than sending things through a Paris shopping service as the only things I want are candy, playing cards, and camera film all of which are impossible to get here or cost about three times what you pay in the States. We have been relieved and so

for us the action is over. At present we are still attached to an army corps with no division in sight. Our getting action this time appears to have been a bit of luck. We are getting a little amusement out of the fortunes and misfortunes of the Allentown men who were attached to us for a while. There were two cooks in the bunch one a good cook and a hard worker we kept him the other utterly lazy and worthless with no conception of cooking we got rid of him. Recently the one we kept was sent to cooking school at the base camp. He writes back that his instructor is Kester the man we kicked out. The best driver and mechanic in that bunch is now an orderly in a base hospital, while the poorest driver and the most worthless and lazy man in the bunch is driving a car at the front. Happy birthday, Mother I don't suppose this will reach you in time, but I wish you a very happy birthday and I hope that your next birthday will be celebrated by the whole family together. Lots of love Towner
