January 21, 1919 My dear Mr. Dyer: In acknowledgement of and in reply to your letter of January 18, 1919, in the interest of Mr. William J. Peters, 310 South Jefferson Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri, I beg to advise you that the records of this office show that on September 6, 1918, Mr. Peters made application for commission with the rank of Captain in the Signal Corps for service in the Photographic Section thereof. There was not, at that time, however, any vacancy in the Photographic Section of the Signal Corps in which it was practicable to utilize his services as Captain, in view of which it was necessary to decline Mr. Peter’s offer of service. Peters, St. Louis, [Missouri] Dear Sir:- Your Country needs you in the patriotic work of selling Thrift Stamps to those people who cannot be reached except by a house to house canvass. I therefore appoint you Chairman of your precinct and trust that you will accept the appointment. This canvass is to begin on January 8th, 1918, and is to be completed by Saturday evening, January 12th. I enclose return postal for your answer, which I trust you will send by return mail. The album includes images of preparedness parades, Missouri soldiers at home on furlough, soldiers leaving for France, African Americans registering for the draft, and various celebrations featuring Missouri units returning home from the war. Peters also collected memorabilia from the war that included post cards, draft cards, Liberty Bond buttons, thrift savings cards and newspaper clippings. |
