Description <p>Personnel record files for Admiral Robert E. Coontz containing a variety of items. Coontz graduated from the Naval Academy in 1885. He was later commissioned Ensign in 1887 and served as Rear Admiral during World War I. During the war he served as Commandant of the Navy Yard at Puget Sound, Washington. In January of 1919 he reported for duty in command of Division 7, Atlantic Fleet and commanded Division 6, Pacific Fleet. Later in October of 1919 he was commissioned Chief of Navl Operations, Navy Department, Washington D.C. He was awarded the Distinguished Cross award for his meritorious service in duty as Commandant of the 13th Naval District and Commandant of the Bremerton Navy Yard.</p>
